In the spring of 1950, Mrs. Katherine Peebles was asked to start a weekend playgroup for young children at the Weston Golf Club so that mothers could play golf. Mrs. Peebles, then a new resident of Weston, had experience with children as a third grade teacher, a day camp counselor, the wife of a pediatrician-in-training, and the mother of a two year old. The playgroup expanded and by summer, the mothers requested that the playgroup continue every day. The golf club could not accommodate the growing number of children so arrangements were made to lease space at the nearby Meadowbrook School. At this point, Mrs. Peebles decided to develop an all-day summer camp program and asked permission to name it “Meadowbrook Day Camp.” Thus, the camp received its name and was settled on its present location. The pond provided not only recreation but also served as the inspiration for the camp’s frog logo. In 1955, with the retirement of Mrs. Peebles, the camp was transferred from private ownership and became part of Meadowbrook School. Mrs. Peebles continues to have an active interest in the camp and is a current member of the Day Camp Committee. The Meadowbrook School is a private day school for children in K-8. It is a non-profit education institution and was incorporated in 1923. As part of the school, the Day Camp is under the sponsorship of the Board of Trustees and under the direction of the Executive Committee of the Board. The Trustees have appointed Daniel E. Hanlon IV as Director of the Camp.
